What to Look For?

Cockroach Habits

Cockroaches are nocturnal, living and feeding in dark, moist places like behind refrigerators, beneath sinks, behind stoves, inside major appliances, and under floor drains, to name a few. They can flatten their bodies to fit into tight spaces like beneath floor mats, inside cracks in the walls or floorboards, and behind wall paper. If you have an infestation, you’ll spot their droppings that look like black pepper or coffee grounds if they’re smaller, or larger, cylindrical droppings if they’re larger cockroaches.

What do They Look Like?
Although their are various kinds of cockroaches, they all have several characteristics in common. All cockroaches have oval shaped bodies that appear flat and range from ¾ inch to approximately 3 inches in length. Their coloring is usually reddish brown to dark brown or close to black, except for immediately after molting when they will appear white.

Some Safe at Home Solutions

Borax
Borax, the readily available laundry product, and white table sugar can be used to kill cockroaches. Combine them in equal parts and dust any areas where you’ve seen cockroaches in your home. Because of the sugar, the cockroaches will eat the borax which will rapidly dehydrate and kill them.
Baking Soda
You can also use a mixture of sugar and baking soda to rapidly exterminate cockroaches in your home and keep them from multiplying. Once again, the sugar acts as the bait while the baking soda is toxic to them. Sprinkle the mixture in corners and anywhere else you find their hiding places.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is highly effective for ridding your home of cockroaches. They cannot stand the smell of this essential oil, so if you make a mixture of peppermint oil and salt water and spray it over the infested areas of your home, you will drive them away rapidly, especially after applying the mixture a few times.

Common West Michigan Ants

american cockroach 3

American Cockroach

The American cockroach is one of the few species that has wings and can fly for short distances. They are usually around 1 ½ inches long with a reddish brown or dark brown color. Despite their name, they are found in many places around the world. American cockroaches are voracious and will eat everything from plant material to garbage.

german cockroach2

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is usually smaller than the American cockroach reaching length of up to ⅝ of an inch. They are light brown to caramel colored and like the American cockroach, they have wings, but they cannot fly. In addition to their coloring, they also have dark, parallel lines that stretch from their wings to the heads. They like warm, moist habitats so you’ll likely see them in your kitchen or bathrooms, near sinks or the dishwasher. With their smaller size, they can hide more easily and are harder to find.

oriental cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental cockroaches are nearly black in color and can reach a length of 1 ¼ inches. Like the German cockroach, they have wings, but cannot fly. They’re sometimes referred to as a ‘water bug’ and they invade homes primarily in search of food, especially if it’s easily accessible in poorly sealed packages or open containers. They are usually found in basements, near drains or woodpiles.

wood cockroach

Wood
Cockroach

Of all the species of cockroaches, the Wood cockroach is the most benign. They don’t carry disease like other cockroaches because they don’t eat filth and they don’t bite humans or pets. They don’t damage furniture and they don’t make nests. They are usually a dark chestnut brown color and the front part of their wings and thorax are outlined by a whitish-yellow color. The males grow to a length from ⅞ of an inch to 1 ⅛ inches in length, while the females reach ½ to ¾ of an inch long.
