Amazing Ants

Ant Findings

Ants are one of natures greatest success stories. For every human there are about 1 million ants. They are the longest living of all insects. A queen ant was recorded to have lived for 30 years in its natural habitat in Idaho, USA.

Ants are strong… very strong. The Asian weaver ant can carry weights more than 100 times their own body weight, upside down on glass!

The cool factor doesn’t really come into play when there are ants around your home. Safeguard Pest Control can help. Email us about your problem or call us at -231-903-0063 -and get the help you need!

Common Ants

Carpenter ants are one of the largest and most common ants in Michigan. Unlike termites, they only nest in wood and do not eat it. Worker ants will however borough through wood with their mandibles and excavate piles outside your walls. You’ll commonly find them in hollow trees and stumps. Sometimes these ants can find their way into your home. Carpenter ants prefer enclosed spaces with excessive moisture conditions. Common places you may find carpenter ants are windows, chimneys, sinks, door frames or bath traps and in hollow spaces such as wall voids.

Finding the Nest

Finding an ant nest can be difficult. Begin by observing where you see the most ant activity. See where they are going and where they are coming from. Ants are great at keeping their home tidy. They quickly remove any excess debris, wood shavings, and dead co-workers form the nest. In many cases, nest debris accumulates in basements beneath the nest area, so look for accumulations of coarse sawdust along basement walls.

You can always use bait to discover where the nest is. Try this:

Mix 4oz of grape jelly with 1 teaspoon of ground up, dried pet food. Put a teaspoon in a bait jar and watch them carry the food back to the nest.

Ant Control, Extermination & Prevention Services

Successful carpenter ant control depends on eliminating the parent colony, which is usually located outdoors. Finding and treating as many satellite nests as possible is the key to effective carpenter ant control. Sometimes, a property can have several nests besides the main colony site. Because it can be difficult to detect these all at the same time, an ongoing pest program will ensure that any activity is addressed immediately to keep the population under control.

That’s where Safeguard Pest Control comes in strong. Let us deal with the problem. The best method for controlling an indoor ant colony is through persistent approved insecticides directly on the colony. We have the proven insecticides and the training to safely use them.

Despite claims by manufacturers, commercially available ant bait stations are simply not that effective. Ants are clever creatures and will simply not take the bait.

It’s always advisable to call and hire a professional when using insecticide to kill carpenter ants, especially if you have pets or children. Chemical treatments are the most effective when dealing with these pests. They are however toxic and should be treated with care and respect. Safeguard Pest Solutions can help.
